Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is a common phenomenon that occurs in women of childbearing age. Although there is no specific reason as to why this happens, scientists attribute the following symptoms to the fluctuation of hormones:

Some women experience mild to moderate PMS symptoms, but there are some who undergo the abovementioned PMS signs severely. Three to eight percent of women have premenstrual dysphoric disorder or PMDD where sufferers become overly depressed for at least a week before they get their period. Some symptoms include:

• Depression with the possibility of thinking about suicide

• Intense irritability, which may result to more frequent outbursts at other people

• Panic attacks

• Anxiety

• Low energy and fatigue

Even though these symptoms happen only once a month before the period starts, women’s lives are affected. This is why whether a woman is suffering from mild or severe PMS symptoms, the good news is that they can be treated. Here are some possible treatments for PMS:

Exercise. Whenever you can, you should get moderate exercise to alleviate PMS symptoms.

2. Sleep. You need to get plenty of sleep, especially since PMS can cause you to have low energy and can leave you feeling fatigued.

3. Eat the right foods. One of the reasons why women have PMS symptoms is because they drink a lot of coffee. You don’t have to get rid of caffeine; just cut back on your consumption to stop PMS symptoms. Also, avoid salty foods as much as possible, as well as drinking alcohol. Some women experience stomachaches before they get their periods. If this is your case, eat smaller meals, instead of sticking with three meals per day.

4. Take some supplements. Among the supplements that you can take are magnesium and vitamin E. Magnesium can reduce water retention while vitamin E can reduce other symptoms. You can also add calcium, since PMS can cause calcium deficiency syndrome in some women. Vitamin B6 also helps in fighting depression and is a good to combine with magnesium supplement.

5. Try some herbal remedies. Black cohosh, chaste berry, and evening primrose oil are some of the best herbal treatments for PMS symptoms. If you will try black cohosh for the first time, you could experience stomach pains as a side effect.
